Scapular
The part of our habit covering the shoulders (scapula means 'shoulders' in Latin) and worn over the tunic. It includes a hood, which symbolises the childlike spirit we try to maintain throughout our life. Postulants and novices are distinguished from professed monks by their shorter, knee-length scapular.
