Cellarer

The monk appointed by the abbot to look after the monastery's temporal (material) goods. St Benedict devotes a chapter to the cellarer in his Rule (ch. 31). His complicated and sometimes thankless task means the other monks are freer for prayer and their own tasks. This does not mean that they are carefree, or, even less, idle!
