Monastery (Priory, Abbey)
The generic name for a house of monks. Monasteries headed by a prior are called priories and those headed by an abbot are called abbeys. The monastery of Solesmes, which was founded c.1010, remained a simple priory until the French Revolution. It did not became an abbey until 1837.
